The Department of Ophthalmology is a top tertiary centre for all kinds of eye diseases. Leading experts in the field cover main topics of research and care on diseases of the retina, the optic nerve and inherited ocular diseases.

The Department of Ophthalmology has numerous clinical and scientific links to other divisions within the organization, i.e. interdisciplinary pathological conferences, multidisciplinary treatment of neurologic patients, care for patients with genetic disorders, and many more. Modern outpatient-services guarantee rapid and high-quality care for all patients from arrive to treatment.

Besides daily clinical care, the Department of Ophthalmology is the leading founder of a multicenter database for age-related macular degeneration. The development of new diagnostic devices and therapies for genetically caused retinal diseases in an international multi-center setting has recently started and will lead to essential improvements of patient care in the near future.
